Plus or minus 62?? For an endangered species, we need to be more accurate – if it’s 62 less, we are losing our precious whooping cranes & need to know that! (Same if it’s 62 more) But to leave it as a guesstimate? That’s outrageous! And critically dangerous to the future of this magnificent bird.

I know I am beginning to sound like a broken record, but this is just too important to settle for anything but the best method of counting the whooping cranes in the Wood Buffalo/Aransas flock. The report speaks of “release a peak whooping crane estimate by the next update.” Tom Stehn gave us actual counts for years, not estimates. If this new method gives us a report that tells us there are 254 cranes estimated, plus or minus 62, that report is useless.
