MEET THE CLASS OF 2013… cont.

We’ve already introduced you to Whooping crane chicks 1-13, 2-13, 3-13 and 4-13. Next in the 2013 line-up is number 5-13.

Chick 5-13 hatched on 5/16 (see how easy it is to confuse all these numbers?), the same day as crane chick 4-13. This little fluffball is the offspring of adults 9-03* and 3-04 and was collected as an egg from the abandoned nest in early May. It is also a full sibling of chick number 2-13. We’re not going to tell them they were both abandoned as eggs…

Next is chick number 6-13. This little bird hatched out a day after number 5-13, on May 17 and its parents (24-08* and 14-08) are also in the Eastern Migratory Population and likewise abandoned their nest in early May. Number 6-13 is currently questionable in terms of whether he/she will join the ultralight ranks. Soon after hatching a respiratory issue presented itself and soon after this a case of diarrhea developed.

By the middle of last week, we weren’t certain the chick would make it but he seemed to turn a corner on Thursday. Patuxent’s crane crew, including Dr. Olsen are keeping a close eye on him. Brooke reports the youngster is very eager and reacts well to the costume and the puppet… he just has breathing issues that they’re trying to get a handle on.

Are the nests being abandoned because of black flies?
