Great Britain Crane Chick Perishes

The first wild crane chick to have hatched in western Britain in more than 400 years has failed to survive its first few days despite being given round-the-clock protection including a guard to ward off egg thieves.

Researchers report catching two brief glimpses of the chick on May 26 and despite days of persistent rain the parents stayed on the nest with the chick before leaving on May 31.
