Right Place at the Right Time

We are fortunate to have a roster of volunteer camera drivers this year that do an incredible job but inevitably there are always some time slots with no available driver. Saturday at 11am was one of those time periods with no name entered on the schedule so I thought I would jump in to the controls.

After about 15 minutes of watching the Class of 2013 eat, poke, prod and preen, I asked on the chat if anyone wanted to cruise around in hopes of spotting the two 2012 Whooping cranes, which have been spotted nearby over the past two weeks.

I got really lucky and actually located them on one of the passes with the camera as they were airborne. Take a look at the video – approximately 10 seconds into it they appear and then fly at first, toward the camera before heading south or left. Eventually they touched down in some tall vegetation and we didn’t see them again that day. Very exciting to capture them on the CraneCam!

Just fabulous Heather! To see them in flight was breathtaking. A good reminder for all the cam drivers to periodically take a tour, who knows what we might see!

It’s great to have White Birds at White River Marsh. We got the chance to see them in 2 different fields yesterday before and after seeing the training at the blind. What a marvelous day!

Thanks, Heather. I missed it live. Aren’t they beautiful?

A big thank you to all the drivers! You’re doing a great job.
