Whooping Crane #3-13

Last week Geoff Tarbox mentioned in his Field Journal entry that crane chick #3-13 had shown a bit of reluctance to exit the enclosure and occasionally had laid down to rest during taxi training sessions with the aircraft.

Since then a number of folks have asked about him (the crane chick, not Geoff) so I thought a quick update about this young crane might be in order.

OM Volunteer Doug Pellerin sent the following image showing #3-13 captured as soon as he exited the pen earlier this week. We will likely never know why he showed reluctance to leave the pen for training but thankfully that only happened a couple of mornings and since the weekend Doug reports he now seems eager to begin training with the aircraft and he has not laid down during training since then either.

Thanks Heather for the update. Very glad both Goeff and Brooke are feeling better. Watched with admiration as the whole skilled team so expeditiously pulled off the banding and health procedures. [yes, holding my breath while telling the birds “breathe in, breathe out, relax”!] Cheers and gratitude!

I love this picture!!! At this stage in their development, when they open their wings they look like they borrowed wings from another bird to put on their body, they just don’t MATCH!!! lol

I wonder if #3-13’s problems last week had to do with the heat and humidity. A lot of human were lethargic, dehydrated, headachey and not acting normal, The birds in the backyard were less active and seemed to be trying to rest more.

Happy to see the beautiful picture that Doug took of #3-13….happy it seems to be doing fine and joining in on training. Oh, by the way , how is Geoff? 🙂
