Weekly Photo Round up

Early last Sunday I had the opportunity to visit the viewing blind at White River Marsh and watch the training from a perspective I’ve not had during my time with Operation Migration. Below are some of the images captured that morning.

Yearling Whooping cranes

Before the fog cleared the two yearlings (4-12 & 5-12) made an appearance. Not long after they were encouraged to leave.

When Brooke Pennypacker appeared in the aircraft the young Whooping cranes were released from their enclosure to begin flight training.

Within seconds all eight (seven in photo) were airborne and following the aircraft over the marsh.

I just read the excellent, informative, and inspirational OM annual report. I am overwhelmed by the generosity, creativity, dedication of everyone. I can only intuit the heartbreak of one step forward, two steps back, yet somehow everyone keeps moving toward the goal of a self-sustaining migratory Whooping Crane population in the east. Godspeed!
