Operation Migration has been awarded a $33000.00 grant from the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund (DWCF). The conservation grant recognizes Operation Migration’s efforts to introduce endangered Whooping cranes to the eastern half of North America utilizing light sport aircraft to guide young cranes along a predetermined migratory route.

“We at Operation Migration can barely express our gratitude for the support of the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund. It gives us great pride to be recognized by such an outstanding leader in the protection of our natural resources,” said OM Co-founder and CEO, Joe Duff.

The funds from this grant will help OM to carry out its 13th project year. Eight young-of-year Whooping cranes have been training with OM aircraft at the White River Marsh State Wildlife Area in Green Lake County, WI since July 9. Currently the entire flock of three-month old Whooping cranes is capable of flights lasting 10 minutes. Over the next few weeks they will continue to build endurance and, in late September, they will depart on their first ever southward migration to Florida – behind OM’s small aircraft.

Disney has been a supporter of our efforts to introduce a migratory population of Whooping cranes in Eastern North America since 2002.
