Rachel Carson’s Sense of Wonder Contest

One of the most rewarding byproducts to come of the Eastern Migratory Population reintroduction of Whooping cranes is the incredible number of school children who follow the project. This is thanks to the number of teachers out there who introduce their students to our natural world.

One such teacher is Ms. Sharon Kuchinski, a second grade teacher at Expressions Learning Arts Academy charter school in Florida. Sharon and her students follow the endangered whooping cranes’ fall migration from Wisconsin to Florida and participate in the Journey North Program and they recently used what they are learning to create a unique theatrical poetry dance entitled: “The Song of the Whooping Crane.”

Their performance has been selected as a finalist in the Rachel Carson’s Sense of Wonder Contest, held by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and they need our votes! Please watch their performance and then cast your vote!

Sounds like we have a lot in common. Would love to connect our classes during this fall migration.

I, too, am a 2nd Grade Teacher and watched enthusiastically as Ms. Kuchinski’s students performed. The entire Operation Migration effort is a one-stop shop of Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, Math and Behavioral Science for my students. We have monitored the migration for the past eight years. I marvel at their ability to assimilate the “reintroduction” message. Blessings on your ability to show them the succes of “Extreme Science”.
