Crane Camp Life – Day #1

Preparations at camp are in full swing as the sounds of Simon and Garfunkel float by with the occasional breeze.

I need a Phillips screw with a head that’s bigger than this one but smaller than this one. Do you have any?  – Check the plastic box in the aircraft trailer… (Found one!)

“I am a rock… I am an island”

Can you fit this bucket under your bed? I need a piece of wood about 3ft long.

“I’d rather be a hammer than a nail”

Richard cuts a hole in the roof of the new tracking van to install the antenna needed to pick up the signals of the radio leg bands the birds wear, interrupting Simon or Garfunkel temporarily.

“And here’s to you Mrs. Robinson…”

Grasshoppers are plentiful and we contemplate ways to capture them for the cranes.

“Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike they’ve all come to look for America”

Geesh, I can’t even hold a cell signal long enough to connect! Oh well I tried to call… Was that a monarch? Have you seen my boots? Do you have any Gorilla tape?

“Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme…”

I can’t find the charger for my radio.

The sound of gorilla tape punctuates the music.

“Listen to the sounds of silence…”

Look at all those Tree swallows! The sky appears REALLY blue today doesn’t it? I’m glad that ragweed died!

“Cecelia you’re breakin in my heart”

Richard makes another trip to the toolbox.

“I am just a poorboy though my story’s seldom told.”

Did anyone pick up bread?

“Like a bridge over troubled water”

An intense conversation about bear, giraffe and mouse scat ensues… (Did you know male/female giraffe poop is a different size)?

“Slow down, you move too fast.
You got to make the morning last.
Just kicking down the cobble stones.
Looking for fun and feelin’ groovy.”

And so it begins… before the 2013 migration even gets underway. Stay tuned.

Is that different poop size true throughout the animal kingdom? Inquiring minds want to know 🙂

I loved this, Heather. It made me feel as though I was a fly on the wall. (I wish.) Keep ’em coming!
