Volunteer of the Year

Our Volunteer of the Year Award was instituted in 2005 to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Operation Migration on behalf of Whooping cranes.

Past recipients include, Nancy Rudd, Wisconsin, Don & Paula Lounsbury, Ontario, Viola White, Illinois, Gerald Murphy, Florida, Walter Sturgeon, North Carolina, Colleen Chase, Florida and last year’s honoree was Linda and David Boyd of Rhinelander, Wisconsin.

On Friday, Sept. 13th at a special dinner held at the Tuscumbia Golf & Country Club, in conjunction with the 2013 Whooping Crane Festival OM’s Liz Condie and Joe Duff presented a very deserving Doug Pellerin with the volunteer of the year award.

Doug travels numerous times each week for up to 2 hours each day to the White River Marsh training site to assist with training the young Whooping cranes. Additionally, he and wife Mako coordinate visits the viewing blind and considering the weather restrictions we have to deal with daily this is no small feat.

This past year Doug and friend Gary Masemore have escorted the CraneCam trailer (aka the beast) to La Crosse, Wisconsin so that we could get it ready for the 2013 training season.

Any organization is only as strong as the volunteers it attracts. Operation Migration is incredibly fortunate to have Doug and the past Volunteer of the Year recipients in our corner.
