Operation Migration is blessed to have many, many, many friends. We have friends of all ages and from all walks of life, all with a diversity of interests from aviation to conservation. One of OM’s good friends is the Georgia Ornithological Society (GOS) , whose members have both taken an interest and actively supported Whooping cranes for years.

Yesterday while we were on the ground refueling the top cover aircraft at the Middleton airport, I received a call from GOS’s Steve Holzman to let us know they were launching a challenge match for their members. Below is Steve’s message to his fellow GOS members. Maybe birders across the country will read Steve’s message and think about matching GOS’s $2000 challenge too!! Wouldn’t that be cool and make a statement on behalf of birders everywhere!

You know, it’s sad, but I believe there are people out there that have never even heard of a Whooping Crane. Never heard the story of how dedicated organizations and people brought the species back from a low of 15 in the 1940s to around 600 today. They have never seen them flying overhead in a small family group, never watched them forage for blue crabs on the Texas Coast. Never head their bugling calls, or watched them dance.

But that’s not us. We know about Whooping Cranes. Some of us have traveled to Texas just to see them. Some of us have even been lucky enough to have seen them migrating over Georgia, on their own or behind an ultralight airplane with a costumed handler at the controls. We care. We want the generations of birders that come after us to see Whooping Cranes migrating over Georgia, stopping for a rest, or wintering in the wetlands of south Georgia. We not only care, but we help make it a reality.

GOS is going to match up to $2000 of our member’s donations to Operation Migration (OM). Starting today. Just visit this webpage to learn how you can help insure that Whoopers will fly over Georgia for many decades to come. You can even donate online at:

Just add “GOS” to the comment line of your check or in the Donation Note section if you donate via the web. OM will keep track of these donations and GOS will match your donation. If you can only give $10, that’s cool. We do what we can.

Let’s show everyone that birders do not hesitate to support bird conservation and restoration. Bring back the cranes!

Thanks for helping us help them!
