Black Fly Outbreak Causes Loons to Abandon Nests

It would seem that those pesky Black flies not only affect nesting Whooping cranes but also Loons. An estimated 70% of Loon nests in northern Wisconsin have been abandoned recently due to a large bloom of the simulium annulus species of black fly.

    GSB falcon chick (Minnesota) exited nestbox and fell June 16 –
    RRP attributes it to blackflies driving him nuts. RRP found 2 hawk fledgling roadside – ditto. Decorah (Iowa) eaglets annoyed by them too.
