Wild Whooping Crane Chicks

Wisconsin DNR pilot Bev Paulan flew a survey today in the core reintroduction area and reports the following chicks are confirmed alive.

#9-05/13-03* – 1 chick (W1-14)

#12-02/19-04* – 1 chick (W3-14)

#28-08/5-10* – 1 chick (W13-14)

* denotes female

Can you spot the chick in this image?

    Every step of this process has been a challenge. When you stop and think about it, the fact that the project has come this far is a kind of miracle. First – working out all the details to get the crane chicks to exist peacefully as a group and to follow the aircraft. Next all the challenges with incubating eggs. We at least understand that problem and are working on the solutions. Looks like the next (and maybe last?) big hurdle is “why the crummy survival from hatching to fledging”.

    To all the biologists, volunteers and other hard working folks who have brought the cranes this far – our thanks. The task must feel almost impossible some days, but know that we appreciate all you do and have every faith in your ability to figure out this latest challenge.

    Maybe they could give tips to the rest of the crew. Like Crane Lamaze classes.

    One of the chicks has been hatched and protected by one of the younger pairs. In fact the female is only 4 years old and I thought that was young for them to reproduce and provide a viable chick. Has her mate been a parent of another chick with a different female? Any theories on their success?

      5-10* and 28-08 have been paired since the fall of 2011. In 2012 they nested and produced an infertile egg (likely too young). Last year they were parents of W1-13 and this year they have W13-14. Practice makes perfect :-)

    Just three out of 13? Sad.
