Return Flight Division

It would appear that the two female Whooping cranes, which had been traveling together have decided to split up. Satellite hits received moments ago indicate the juvenile, number 2-15 is in Morgan County, Indiana, while the 2 yr. old female, number 7-14 is northwest of her in Iroquois County, IL.

We have no way of knowing if perhaps one or more of the males in the group stayed with 2-15 but since last summer, 4-13 has been associating closely with 7-14 so it’s likely that pair decided to continue on together.

Here’s a Google Earth grab showing their approximate locations:

The five remaining juveniles in the Class of 2015 remain at St. Marks NWR.

I believe I’ve spotted 2-15 in North Central Indiana, just South of Warsaw Indiana. On Sunday March 27 around 7:15 pm. She was eating in a picked corn field with standing water, she looked healthy. I hope this helps.

Although she has come a long way North, I hope 2-15 has not bitten off more than she can chew. I am praying that she can go it alone the rest of the way. Whoop, Whoop, 2-15! Go, Girl!

No surprise that those two would have leadership squabbles! Saying a prayer that #2-15 still has another crane with her to show the way and/or she gets turned a little west. Thank you for the update Heather!

Thank you Heather, the class of 2015 probably feel at home at St. Marks. And who knows maybe 2-15 and 7-14 might be looking for a mate?? Or companionship, traveling buddy, 7-14 might be showing 2-15 the new horizons!

2-15 did have a mind of her own but we will pray that all is well and she or they will all catch up and make it home safely.

  6. Christy March 26, 2016 9:25 am

Primaries crossed that 5-12 and 4-14 are with 2-15.

  7. Susan Marsh March 26, 2016 9:22 am

    Thank you for the update!

  8. Jane Maher March 26, 2016 9:18 am

Concerned about 2-15 if alone. Primaries crossed.

Good Morning! Do the Whoopers generally follow the same schedule that they had when traveling South with the Ultarlight, ie, travel in the early morning, and rest and feed the rest of the day?

    • Heather Ray March 27, 2016 6:36 am

They fly midday and afternoon when thermal activity peaks.

      • Barb March 27, 2016 7:51 am

Thanks, Heather for the reply. Hope 2-15 turns Westward soon, or she’ll end up on the wrong side of the Lake.
