Man Sentenced for Shooting Whooping Crane

Lane Thibodeaux, 21, of Gueydan, Louisiana was sentenced by Federal judge Carol Whitehurst to serve 45-days in jail and pay a fine of $2500. If the fine is not paid in full within a year, he could return to jail for an additional 6 months.

Thibodeaux pleaded guilty late last week to five charges related to shooting and injuring a whooping crane that ultimately had to be euthanized.

The bird, which was first released by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries in January 2014, was found in November of that year near Gueydan, with a gunshot wound to the leg. The crane was transported to LSU Veterinary School, but could not be saved.

Well, it’s s good start. Now, if someone would drop a dime on that shooter in Ill. (?), maybe we could make some more progress.

Last night on Charter Cable channel 193 ANT a rerun of an old Johnny Carson show had a wildlife segment. They showed a crane which, due to an injury, was fitted with a wooden leg by a Dr. Ted Simmons. I believe it was in a segment with Jim Fowler. The crane was able to walk on its own. Just a thought; has research ever been continued in this regard?

ICF may be aware of this type of research or have information in their library pertaining to this.

Too bad he didn’t get a heftier sentence.

The fine was not stiff enough. He should have to do some community service all so. But not until after he serves his sentence.

I’m glad that two brave persons came forward to help convict this killer. Only 21 years old… so sad to think that this person is behaving like this. I only hope that this jail sentence and fine will teach him responsible behavior. I hope the court ensures he pays the fine, and not his family or friends.

This person sounds like one that needs to have a longer jail sentence and a more hefty fine. I would think the life of this crane would be worth more than the fine and sentence that he got. Why are people like this put on this beautiful earth???

Please please please put a date near the top of these posts. There was no way to tell from the post itself how current this news is. I see a date down below it, but it looks like a system-generated date that will change over time.
Thank you, for all your work.

If accessing the page from a pc the date is at the top left of each and every post. Directly to the left of the title of the post/entry.
If accessing on a mobile device, the date at the bottom, which you mentioned is the date the entry was published. It does not change at all.

Good news he was found guilty & sentenced but NOT ENOUGH FINE OR PUNISHMENT!!!! It’s not going to end if they get off with a slap on the wrist.

At least he got sentenced. Still seems like a minor inconvenience for killing an Endangered species!
