Aerial Survey

Yesterday, Wisconsin DNR Pilot, Bev Paulan flew over the western portion of the state to count Whooping cranes.

Bev reports she saw only seven whoopers during her flight. They include: 65-15 & 7-07 in Sauk County, 14-15, 5-11/12-11, and 6-15/16-04, all in Juneau County.

There are still whoopers in the eastern half and we’re hopeful Matthew Brandt will be able to get a flight in today to let us know who they are.

i’m confused. are you no longer taking them to florida the way you did the last many years? are they migrating on their own?

Correct. The 2015 group was the last to learn a migration route following our aircraft. Going forward, WCEP is focusing on Parent-Rearing releases.

thanks for the update. it’s about this time of year that i start checking to see when they might come over marshall county KY where for 3 years i got to come out (and nearly freeze to death LOL) for the chance to see the ultralite AND the birds. loved it. sad to not have that happen again but i’m sure what you’re now doing will be just as important.
