Beautiful photos! In the early to mid 70s had relatives that lived on Canoe Run in Lewis County, WV, a pair of them were often spotted in a pond in a meadow over a bank by the road, people would stop and watch them. I remember people saying they raised at least one chick every summer.
My third grade class studies whooping cranes each fall and enjoys visiting your website to see the birds first hand. Thanks for taking the time to keep the world updated on your progress. Keep flying, whoopers!

Whooping Cranes
by E. George Strasser
Have you ever seen, a whooping crane,
stand in a swamp in the pouring rain?
or on a mudflat as it cakes, eating minnows
and catching snakes.
Back in 1942,
their population, was very few.
and just to be, really succinct.
the species almost was extinct
Our tallest bird would soon be lost
we must save it at any cost.
Operation Migration then came to be.
saving the cranes so amazingly.
Watch the birds while they’re in flight
following an ultralight.
If you enjoy this story friend
watch the cranes come round the bend.
Now if these birds you start to track
You’ve just become a “CRANIAC”.
Wonderful!
Way to go George! Nicely done!
Great poem!
Love your poem!
