The Predator-Proof Crane Enclosure at Site 4
As with the other two training site enclosures, site four has three sections: the large netted section on the right is constructed mostly in water to provide an area where the birds will learn to forage for food and as well, learn to water roost. The other two sections allow us to separate the cohort if necessary, while still allowing the birds to be able to see each other through the fencing. This is sometimes necessary when the cranes are working out their dominance order. ![]()
Constructed of chain-link, the bottom two-feet is buried under the muck to prevent predators from gaining access. As well, the entire enclosure features three strands of electric fencer wire; two near the bottom and one closer to the top. ![]()
This is the view that the young cranes will see. The roofed area on the left is the feeding station where high protein crane chow will be available in gravity feeders. The roof will keep the feed dry at all times and the graveled area will ensure that any moisture, which may accumulate will drain, reducing the chance of bacteria forming on any food that spills.
