Migration 2004

Fall Ultralight-Guided Whooping Crane Migration
Wisconsin to Florida

Date: October 20, 2004

Day Eleven - Green County, WI (STILL!)

Richard, Joe & Brooke prepare to take-off at 8:40 am as the windsock on the right hangs down, indicating little, or no wind. Just after the trikes were airborne our migration host informed me that he had placed a brick inside the sock in a futile attempt to get rid of us - payback for my suggesting to him that he should start shopping around for a bigger Thanksgiving turkey...
At 8:44 Richard takes off from the secluded crane enclosure with several young birds in tow. You can tell by the trees in the distance that the air is full of moisture.
Richard van Heuvelen appears over the Operation Migration aircraft trailer with nine juvenile Whooping cranes in pursuit of his ultralight.
Once they caught up to him they seemed to form up nicely...
Brooke Pennypacker appears next with the remaining five birds.
Unfortunately, they soon decided to turn back toward their pen site.
Joe has picked up two of Richard's original nine followers...
Until they also refuse to follow, deciding instead to turn back and land beside their enclosure.
