Fall Ultralight-Guided Whooping Crane Migration
Wisconsin to Florida
Date: October 11, 2004
Day Two
| Volunteer driver, Gerald Murphy assists Brooke. |
| Old parachutes serve as wing covers to prevent frost from forming
on the wings overnight. Unfortunately, this morning frost also
formed on the underside of each wing, requiring pilots to wait until
sunrise before they could take off. |
| Brooke Pennypacker emerges from the isolated pen site with only
five young Whooping cranes following behind. |
Joe moved in and did a low pass over the travel enclosure to pick up
the remaining birds that were temporarily stuck inside their pen.
| The determined cranes caught up to Joe very quickly and formed up
on his wing. |
Joe arrives at our Sauk Co., WI location with the fall foliage and
blue sky providing a perfect backdrop.
