Day 36 - Nov. 20, 2003

Adair Co., Kentucky  to Cumberland Co., Tennessee

Mark Nipper and Charlie Schaffer wait out of sight from the cranes for Joe to give the thumbs up...

Once the pilot is in place and ready to take-off, the cranes are released.

In no time at all their large wingspans carry them into the air behind their mechanical surrogate.

This morning Joe circled the field with them to gain altitude as videographer Jeff Huxmann crouches behind the wooden seat that offers a perfect vantage point of the valley and river below.

pockets of fog linger as the cranes and planes climb out of the valley.
