Day Ten - Oct. 25, 2003

Ogle County, IL to LaSalle County, IL

Richard, Brooke and Joe prepare to take-off to test the winds, as well as the patchy fog.
Richard lifts off into the hazy and cool morning air.
After ensuring that the fog was not as thick as they had first thought, Joe performs the very first air pickup since the rain that fell through the night left the field that held the crane enclosure too soggy to land in.

He manages to get twelve cranes to follow. Not bad considering it's their first air pick-up!

A flurry of white feathers soon disappeared into the misty morning sky.
Brooke lent his wing to crane 317 after he broke away from the main group off Joe's craft, while Richard moved in to pick up two more late starters.

Day Eleven - Oct. 26, 2003

LaSalle County, IL to Kankakee County, IL

Seven right; eight left. Beautiful formation as Brooke leads the cranes over the Northview Square Mall in Kankakee, IL. at 8:20 a.m.
Female #303 flies with the trike for the first time since undergoing surgery to repair a small fracture in her knee on Oct. 7th. Richard flew this crane for the entire 56.7 mile leg to Kankakee County to ensure she had full benefit of the wing vortices for her first flight in more than three weeks.
