Day Seventeen - Nov. 1, 2003

Boone County, IN - Morgan County, IN

First team photo: Kneeling (left) - Joe Duff, Co-founder/pilot/crane handler - Operation Migration; Dan Sprague, Bio-technician - USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. Back (L - R): Charlie Schaffer, Intern/crane handler - Operation Migration; Sara Zimorski, Aviculturalist - International Crane Foundation;  Richard van Heuvelen, Pilot/crane handler - Operation Migration; Mark Nipper, Intern/crane handler - Operation Migration; Jeff Huxmann, Videographer/Driver/Brooke's handler - Operation Migration; Heather Ray, Outreach/education coordinator/website pilot - Operation Migration; Brooke Pennypacker, Confused Pilot/crane handler/team jester/Jeff's responsibility - Operation Migration.  Missing from photo are our top-cover angel's; Don & Paula Lounsbury.
Joe takes off from our Boone County stopover to test conditions.

The cranes are launched at 8:36 a.m. as Brooke moves in to perform the third air pick-up of this trip.
Note the colour difference between the younger crane on the left, which still has quite a few tawny feathers vs. the slightly older flock mate on the right with it's mostly white plumage.

Brooke positions his craft in front of the birds and they quickly fall into formation behind.
