Day 54 - Dec. 8, 2003 - FINAL ARRIVAL

 Gilchrist Co., FL to Citrus Co., FL - Chassahowitzka NWR

At 9:45 a.m. December 8th - 54-days after leaving the Necedah NWR in central Wisconsin, Joe Duff came into view leading a single young Whooping crane over the Crystal River Mall in Crystal River, FL. 
One minute later, at 9:46 a.m. Brooke Pennypacker appeared over the tree line with a long single line of fifteen cranes.

15 minutes later all sixteen youngsters in the Class of '03 touched down for the first time on the isolated island within the Chassahowitzka NWR on Florida's central west coast, where they will spend the winter.

The crowd of more than 1,000 listen as John Christian, Assistant Regional Director for Migratory Birds - Region 3, USFWS and Co-chair of the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership explain details of this wildlife success story.
