A HUGE Thank-you to the San Antonio Zoo for providing three Whooping cranes for this year's project! Welcome aboard!

Training gets underway...

Photos taken at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel, MD.
Barb uses the puppet to teach chick #1 to forage for insects.
Dan uses Robo-crane to lead the first young chick to the circle-pen for its first training session with the aircraft. The chick is first coaxed inside the enclosure and as the ultralight taxis slowly around the outside, the chick follows the puppet, which Dan extends over the fence, just in front of the tiny crane. Robo-crane dispenses meal-worms to reward the chicks for a job well-done.

Here, chick #3 waits inside the circle-pen with the puppet head as Dan moves to get into position in the aircraft.

The circle-pen is used to protect the young cranes from the propeller.
