After the arrival health examination and x-ray procedure, it was
discovered that Whooping crane 402 had ingested a metal washer,
which obviously needed to be removed. The isolation-rearing protocol
is adhered to during the endoscopy procedure, which took place on
June 21st. Many thanks to Ann Stewart (veterinary technician),
Dr. Jean Pare and Dr. Chris Hanley and Terri Gregson
(veterinary technician) at the University of Wisconsin School of
Veterinary Medicine.
Here is the offending metal washer almost 1 1/8 inches in size.
Shortly after the procedure, crane 402 walks alongside a costumed
handler, returning to the North training site at the Necedah Wildlife
Refuge - obviously suffering no ill effects from the procedure to
remove the washer.
