Once the second cohort arrived at the refuge on June 30th they
were released into the West Training site. Here Brian Clauss
(costumed) spends time with the new arrivals as they investigate
their new surroundings.
Chick 417 is curious and interested in the water basin.
Chick 416 has a small cast on the outside toe of his right foot and is
not allowed to get it wet. He is separated from the others by a chain
link fence, which still allows him to interact and socialize with his
flockmates.
Despite its awkward appearance the cast has not prevented this
young male crane from exercise sessions with the aircraft.
Because young cranes grow at a rapid rate the cast will need to be
changed shortly to accommodate his growing foot. Until the toe heals
at least he has an entire feeder all to himself...
