Field Training - Necedah National Wildlife Refuge
August 1 - 13, 2004
 |
| The ground crew arrives at the training sites before the pilots
and must wait before entering the crane pens so that the young birds
don't get too excited. Here Tatiana waits patiently for the
ultralight to show up. |
 |
| Also waiting this morning was a former student, crane #101.
Referred to as "big number 1" he is the large, dominant
male from the 2001 project year. |
|
|
Before the young birds are let in from the wet section of their pen
handlers must pick up any food that has spilled, or been knocked out
of the suspended feeders. This is done so that the cranes don't eat
any bits of food that may have bacteria on them.
|
|
| 2-year old males #211 & 212 are often at the East Site each
morning. These two usually keep to themselves and rarely disrupt
training. |

out one afternoon to explore the public areas of the refuge.
