2002 Migration South: Wisconsin to Florida

Some of the team pictured with two crew members from the BBC before their departure. Pictured left to right: Heather Ray, Mark Nipper, Dan Sprague, Kelly Maguire, Tom - BBC, Lara Fondow, Richard van Heuvelen, Mark - BBC and Brooke Pennypacker.
Mark puts the finishing touches on the second travel enclosure, which houses the cranes during the trip south.
What was hoped would be our departure flight on Oct. 11th turned into a training flight when the pilots were greeted with a headwind once airborne. Here Richard leads the cranes on a flight over Rynearson pond to the delight of the media and public.
On Oct. 12th an unstable system passed through the area preventing our departure. If the cranes are not able to fly with the trikes, they are released for a flight on their own to exercise their large and still developing wings.
