The youngest chick in the new flock is crane #18. Here he is being checked for signs of dehydration. Patuxent veterinarians lightly pinch the skin on its leg: if it stays pinched this is an indication that the tiny chick needs fluids. If the skin quickly rebounds to its normal state when pinched, the chicks' fluid levels are fine.
