Hatching and Health Procedures

Crane #7 hatched on April 27th, 2002

Soon after hatching the new chick is given a full health examination by Patuxent's Veterinarian Glenn Olsen.
Health exams are carried out in full costume, while adhering to the strict no-talking rule. Here 25-day old chick #7 is examined.
Occasionally it is necessary to tape the toes on some of the cranes. This prevents to toes from curling under, which would make it difficult for the young cranes to progress normally.
