Early Circle-Pen Training Takes Place at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center

7-day old chick, number 3 in one of his first sessions with its mechanical "Mom."

The chicks work from inside the circle, protected from the wheels of the aircraft as it taxies the perimeter outside the enclosure.
The oldest five colts enjoy some mealworms; a reward for a job well done.
A mock wing was used to familiarize the young cranes with the basic shape of the real wing, which will be added later in the training, once they are transported to the Necedah refuge.
