The oldest crane but one of the smallest. Very
attentive and the best early follower. Typically runs along on the
right side of the trike during taxi-training.
Great follower/strong flyer during migration.

Co. - Meigs Co., TN
Winter: Acquired adult voice week of Jan. 4-10, 2004
Spring '04: Departed Chass with 7 others on Mar. 30

Large
bird - will likely be the biggest of the entire flock. He uses
his size and is aggressive to the costume. This crane lost the
most blood feathers during shipping from Patuxent. It still does
not have a bustle but it is a good flyer and follower.
Dependant socially on crane 303. While 303 was away
recovering from surgery this crane was reluctant to follow and
appeared withdrawn socially.
Dropped out of 1st leg of migration and returned to training
site at Necedah refuge. Crated and trans. to first
stopover.
Ultralight Migration: Missed a total of 134.1 miles:
Jackson Co., IN to Oldham Co., KY. ~18 miles between Cumberland
Co. to Meigs Co., TN. Meigs Co., TN to Gordon Co., GA.
Winter: Acquired adult voice Mar. 14-20,2004
Spring '04: Departed Chass with 7 others Apr. 7th.
Returned to Necedah NWR.
Fall '04: Migrated south to winter in South Carolina.

The first of the seventeen birds to officially get
airborne.
She took her first short, low flight on July 1st. Good follower!
Very dominant within her flockmates. Best buds with 302.
Developed limp following health check and banding on Aug.
27th. Prescribed rest and anti-inflammatory meds. Condition
persisted. X-rays revealed a fracture to right knee. Surgery
Oct. 7th to correct. Isolation protocol adhered to as she
recuperated at ICF. Reunited with cohort Oct. 17. Crated to
migration stops 3 & 4 to restrict movement. LOVES pumpkins/cranberries.
Ultralight Migration: Due to surgery recovery period,
missed a total of 186.6 miles as she was not allowed (Doctors
orders) to re-join her flockmates until leaving LaSalle Co., IL.
Spring '04: Departed Chass with 7 others on Mar. 30.
Initially ended up east of Wisconsin's northern terminus and
spent time in SW Michigan with 312 & 316. Successfully
circumnavigated the lower end of Lake Michigan and returned on
July 28 to core reintroduction area with 312 & 316.
Fall '04: Migrated south with 312 & 316 to winter in
Marion Co., FL.
Spring '05: 3/20-Departed northward with 312 & 316.

Average
bird with no bad habits. Sara says it is the MOST IMPROVED bird
and seems to have recovered from initial shyness. This is the
bird that often stands outside the pen while the others chase
after the aircraft. Then it seems to realize it can’t get back
inside the pen so it flies after us and joins the training.
Ultralight Migration: Flew every mile!

Best follower of this cohort. Introduced
to wing of aircraft 6/27. Often appears as if he plans on
jumping in the pilots seat as he investigates the aircraft. VERY
curious! 6/23: handlers watched him find a garter snake and shake it
until it was dead. Flock mate 311 then swiped it, swallowing it
whole!
Wimpy and small and often cries to the puppet. This is the bird that
loves to peck at the aircraft and will not leave it alone. Not
yet a strong flyer.Ultralight Migration: Missed 33.1 miles - Cumberland Co. to

Aggression issues with #311. Separated
upon arrival at Necedah so they could continue to socialize
through fence without harming each other. Divider removed 6/23. Introduced to wing of
aircraft 6/27. Despite
initial aggression problems with #311, they now hang together
and 310 is torn between following the aircraft and staying with
311 who is aloof and standoffish.
Dropped out of 1st leg of migration and returned to training

Dominant over #310. Separated upon
arrival at Necedah so they could continue to socialize through
fence without harming each other. Divider removed 6/23. Also on
6/23 this crane stole a garter snake from #307, which had killed
it. He swallow the treat whole. Introduced to wing of aircraft 6/27. Occasionally prefers to
wander off into the marsh during training. Has made great
progress and is now a good follower when once he ignored the
aircraft and handlers. We spent much time with him to improve
his performance. Since then he has discovered the wing vortices
and is a great follower.
Dropped out of 1st leg of migration and returned to training
site at Necedah refuge. Crated and transported to first
stopover. Reluctant to depart 1st stopover, however, once it
made the entire leg to the 3rd location, also reluctant to land.

Just
generally a good bird with no bad habits and a good follower.
Does challenge costumed "strangers" such as visiting
veterinarians or aviculturists.
Likes to be part of the group during flights. Gets anxious if
it is a lone crane with one of the ultralights, and keeps
glancing at the main flock as if it would prefer to join them.
Ultralight Migration: Missed 33.1 miles - Cumberland Co. to
Meigs Co., TN.

Slight limp, aggravated by running after
aircraft. She is very intent to follow the trike despite the
limp - may be a slipped tendon. At times reluctant to come out
of the pen. Once out, however, it is a good follower. Once it
gets better at flying and does not need to run as much this bird
should be more enthusiastic.
Sustained
serious injuries during training Aug. 7th when she apparently
ventured too close to the rear wheel of the ultralight as it was
taxiing for take-off. The injured bird was immediately
transported to the International Crane Foundation for evaluation
and medical treatment. Shortly after arriving at the crane
foundation, Dr. Barry Hartup reported to the team that
the 82-day old female Whooping crane went into cardiopulmonary
arrest while already under anesthesia, and the decision was made
not to attempt resuscitation due to the extent of her injuries
and poor prognosis for recovery. |

Originally a bit aggressive toward the others. Separated upon release at
West site training area to avoid issues. Able to socialize
through
fence until aggressive tendencies subsided. All
of the birds from cohort three are going through their
independent stage and often ignore the aircraft and handlers. 316
is among the worst. At times reluctant to come out of pen for
training but once out is a good follower.

The
wimpiest bird we have but also the youngest, so maybe it will
come around. We are spending more time with this crane than any,
but so far, it is still gate-shy and nervous about being away
from the wet pen and often ignores the costumed handlers unless
they have treats. Our most worrisome bird.
As of fall migration time this bird has improved greatly and is
very attentive to the aircraft.
Ultralight Migration: Flew every mile!

Ended up east of Wisconsin's northern terminus and
spent the first part of the summer in Michigan with 301, 305,

Sadly, this young male was lost to predation during the
last week of July '04 at his Michigan roost site.
